Scatter brains pay attention. If you need some poignant reminders of what you need to do before you go abroad here is a useful check list that might just help.
DOCUMENTS
• Check your passport and visa are in date.
• Confirm your flight reservation.
• Make sure you have appropriate vaccinations for your destination.
• Check your ticket for dates, times and which airport!
• It’s always helpful to carry photocopies of important documents packed separately from originals.
• Do you have all your credit cards, travellers’ cheques and currency? Pack some in your luggage and some in your hand luggage and carry the rest. Spreads your risk a little.
• European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) (for healthcare in a European Economic Area country, or Switzerland).
• See what the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) are saying about your destination.
• Do you have your driving licence?
• Does your travel insurance adequately cover you for your destination?
• Write your destination on your home address and outbound luggage labels.
HOUSE
• Clear out any fresh food or you’re going to end up with a stinky kitdchen when you get back.
• Tell a trusted neighbour you’re going to be away.
• Really important this one if you don’t want to permanently hack your local residents off. If your car is alarmed, leave spare keys with a neighbour.
• For long periods of travel, have the post office hold your mail at the depot.
• Turn off and unplug electrical appliances, except freezer and fridge.
• Make sure the gold fish have those long lasting food blocks and the other animals are safely provided for.
• Leave spare keys and contact number with someone you trust.
• This ones a little bit cheeky if you ask me, but there you go. Ask someone to water your plants.
• Check windows and doors are locked.
• Set timers on lights, to make your house appear occupied.
• Keep it quiet that you’re about go away, to reduce the risk of burglars.
• Really important - if you think it’s going to get cold while your away, don’t forget to set the heating and hotwater to come on periodically - otherwise you’re going to end up with a very wet house when you get back!
