River Cottage Catch and Cook
I am a big fan of actually getting to grips with the food we eat. Just unwrapping the packaging on a piece of steak or fish and dropping it into the frying pan is all to easy. How many of us go squeamish at the thought of killing and gutting a fish but are perfectly happy to gobble down a Dover Sole without a second thought?
Well, there’s nothing to stop any of us popping to a coastal spot, river or lake and catching your dinner. However, most of us will want some guidance and that’s where River Cottage Catch and Cook days might be of help.
Based on the southern coast of Great Britain the Catch and Cook day talks you through the rudiments of angling, hands on cooking and filleting followed by a full on piscatorial feast.
The River Cottage web site says:
“The tastiest fish you will ever eat is one you have caught yourself - and our one-day Catch and Cook course is designed to help you do exactly that. We will show you how to catch, clean, fillet and cook a selection of Dorsets finest inshore fish. Regular catches include mackerel, bass, bream, and Pollack.
The day begins bright and early at Lyme Regis harbour, where we will meet at 8.30am. The day will be hosted by members of our River Cottage Team including 2 expert fishermen, a trained chef and a marine biologist.
After boarding our three dedicated River Cottage charter boats, we will head off to see what we can catch. Apart from rod-and-line fishing, we might do some crab-potting or sole-netting too. Our endeavours will be fuelled by an on-board River Cottage brunch and, with luck, maybe even a little super-fresh mackerel sashimi.”
The Catch and Cook day costs £225 ($450).
