CallUma The Mobile Translation Service
Last year I was caught in Southern Spain crossing a red light. It was a complete accident and I was rightly pulled over by an angry police officer. I like to think that I can string a few sentences of Spanish together but under the pressure of the moment I crumpled and resorted to stupid pigeon English. The police officer thankfully took pity and sent me away with a flee in my ear and a few choice words in excellent English….
It was with this in mind that I dropped on the amazing service provided by CallUma. Launched in March this year the service is a membership scheme costing £19.50 per annum that offers linguistic assistance in 140 languages.

They throw up some salient examples where this could be useful:
“Call Uma will arrange an ambulance or doctor to get to you in Spain, talk Japanese to a Japanese policeman and then translate back into English for you, you can take a picture of a road sign in Russia, send it to them and they will tell you where you are or what it says. You also get a luggage tracking system, free phone “minutes” (varies depending on your membership), lost credit card assistance and unlimited free calls to emergency services.”
All in all a great idea. I only wish it had been available last year - maybe then I wouldn’t have ended up going mute at just the wrong moment!!!
