If you’re lucky enough to pay a visit to Manhattan you simply must pop into Bemelmans Bar in New York City.

Recognised as an old favourite of ex US Presidents such as John F Kennedy, Bemelmans is situated within the art deco palace that is the Carlyle Hotel.

Cited in most tourist guides as a must see for Jazz enthusiasts, the Carlyle enjoys a prolific reputation amongst Manhattans celebrity elite - Woody Allen keeps a room here so he can jam with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band.

However, Bemelmans itself is all about great drinks and truly great barmen - that’s the experience.

The bar takes it’s name from Ludwig Bemelmans the artist most famous for illustrated children’s books about a French girl called Madeline, who persuaded the management at the Carlyle to give him a suite for 18 months in exchange for a paint job. The result was a beautiful mural evoking Central Park in all it’s glory.

The signature cocktail Bemelmans Barter is a potent mix of Cognac, curacao, bitters, nutmeg and pineapple juice.
