Are Airlines Getting Dirtier?

On the more commercial low budget airlines cleanliness seems to be becoming a bit of a problem. At least this has been my recent experience on some flights.

I know that we’re often paying very low prices for flights but quite honestly it’s getting to be a bit of a problem. Do we really want to sit down on a flight to find that our trousers are stuck to the seat cushion via a masticated piece of chewing gum or lavatories with all manor of bodily fluids sloshing about all over the place!

Given the smaller margins in airline travel, companies really are starting to cut back to the very bare bones of their service. Makes you wonder where else their cutting back!

It’s a problem that others are starting to notice.

New York Times have a fairly damning article on the state of current air travel.

One man is quoted as saying:

“You put your hand in the seatback pocket and there’s an open McDonald’s ketchup container in there,”

I know where he’s coming from.

No ones under any illusion as to the causes of this problem. “Basic outsourced functions such as cleaning quite simply go to the lowest bidder and to heck with the service they provide.”

Delta Airlines, who are not alone in this I hasten to add, were recently identified as reducing their deep clean schedule to every 15 months as opposed to the industry standard of 30 days. After noticeable issues resulting from this, Delta reinstated the 30 day clean and introduced proper auditing of the process - that must be a relief for regular passengers!

We’ll see whether this heralds a new cleaner era for commercial airlines. Some how I doubt it.
