One of the UK’s most historic and beautiful towns is Lavenham in Suffolk. Teaming with history and ancient architecture Lavenham really is a piece of old England suspended in time.

If you visit Lavenham there really is no where better to stay than the The Swan Hotel.

It’s pedigree is rooted firmly in Lavenham’s heritage of a thriving wool trade. The hotel includes beautiful features which include ancient beams, medieval wall paintings and inglenook fireplaces.

Double bedrooms and rooms including four poster beds are quaintly named after Suffolk villages.

The cuisine is excellent with the restaurant enjoying two rosette status.

The Swan includes a glorious medieval courtyard, garden and minstrel’s gallery for those wanting to celebrate their nuptials.

We all know how spectacular the scenery in Switzerland can be - therefore where better to get hold of some guaranteed powder. Jungfrau a domineering mountain reaching up 4,000 meters could be just the place for a spot of Christmas skiing - and includes some of the most breathtaking views in the Alps.

Basing yourself at Grindelwald, which is one of the best equipped resorts in the area - you can enjoy toboggan runs, one of which winds beneath the Eiger, skating, cross country skiing and snow shoeing.

It’s very unlikely that you will be lacking snow at these sorts of altitudes - but if fresh powder does become thin on the ground you can always take a train to Europe’s highest railway station, situated at 3,454 metres.

Discounts are usually offered in Autumn with something like the four star Hotel Scheizerhorf costing around £1,457 ($3,000) per person half board.

The all new St Pancras Station opens for business this week and quite frankly it looks stunning. Mind you, so it should for £800 million. This isn’t the end of the story though, the Midland Hotel which last operated in 1937 is due to open in February 2009. The red-brick building created in high Gothic style, which fronts the station and was designed as a railway hotel by Sir George Gilbert Scott only survived demolition through the tenacity of Sir John Betjeman who fought to preserve the original structure as a Grade I listed building.

The new Midland Hotel will include a ballroom, swimming pool, a number of function rooms and the main restaurant will be returned to the Victorian style incorporating many original features such as a cantilevered staircase, wrought ironwork, stained glass and Minton tiling. 67 apartments will be added at the top of the building.

Quite frankly, I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with this masterpiece of a building.

Lobster has to be one of the sweetest tasting shell fish there is. They usually come at a fairly tasty price to boot!

If you fancy catching your own lobster dinner you could try Handelsman Flink Spa Hotel which offers a Swedish based one night lobster safari from £215 ($430) per person, half board, based on two sharing and including the obligatory lobster supper.

image

Sweden’s Bohuslan coast provides the setting for the safari with most of the local gatronomy taken over by lobster dishes or what the locals call “black gold of the sea”.

The Handelsman Flink Spa Hotel is located an hour and half north of Gothenberg and offers the lobster safari in conjunction with sea kayaking and mountain biking.
