An SOS to all keen cyclists - you look like utter muppets wearing those lycra, ball busting numbers. Think about it ladies and gentleman!!

Thank god for Paul Smith whose seen the light and decided to produce some clothes for cyclists that actually look as if they were designed by a human being. Alleluia!!!

The 531 range of cycling gear for men is sleek as it is cool i.e loose fitting jeans with leather straps - to replace the humble bicycle clip. T-shirts and shirts that button onto jeans to prevent flap flap. Other items include a Tweed cap and streamlined anorak!

According to those in the know, high end holidays are moving into “Extreme Luxury”. Sounds like an oxymoron,  but maybe not. The Other Side situated in Neiden is due to open in December as a “high concept” travel experience, intended to encapsulate luxury and extreme in the one package.

Steaming across the icy wastes on a snow mobile has always seemed like quite an appealing mode of transport, particularly as a change of pace from skiing. Well if that appeals then you might want to pay a visit to Humber Valley Resort where you can snowmobile to your hearts content across the breathtaking countryside.

Wrapped up in a compulsory all in one suit you head out on a leisurely ride into unspoilt terrain. There are around 1,200 groomed trails that wind through wooded areas, open snowfields and deep mountain ravines. Keep your eyes peeled for the elk that wander around as they please. Tours start from $150 (£71).

As a keen fisherman myself I am always enthusiastic about exploring new opportunities. However, ice fishing is not something that springs immediately to mind when considering new fishing challenges.

Nonetheless, there are reports that many people are making their way to Fernie each season on the promise of huge dumps of snow and being tempted by alternative past times to skiing - ice fishing being one of them. Many of the locals contend that for a true taste of traditional Canadian life you really need to, head out on an ice fishing trip. Um I suppose they would say that wouldn’t they!

The trip is offered by Fernie Wilderness Adventures who pick you up from your hotel, and escort you by 4x4 (or snowmobile if you’re lucky) to one of the nearby lakes. They’ll cut a hole and show you how to drop a line after which it’s a matter of patience. If you’re fortunate, you’ll be having fresh Eastern Brook trout for supper.

I can’t say that this gets me particularly excited, but I suppose you simply can’t knock these things until you try them!
